  Government official commits suicide
Published on January 19, 2008 by IANSViewed 409 times

An official of the information and broadcasting ministry allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan of her south Delhi home Friday evening, the police said. Ashiya Rahat, 38, a section officer, was found hanging at her Sadiq Nagar home in the Defence Colony neighbourhood around 4 p.m. The police sent her body for post-mortem examination to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The police said she had married Irfan, a government official, five years ago. The couple was childless.

"Initial investigations reveal that she was taking medication to overcome depression. This could be the apparent cause of her extreme step, but the matter is under investigation," a police official said.

A sub-divisional magistrate inquest has also been ordered.
