  Red Card For Music Directors!
Published on March 25, 2007 by Malladi NarasimhamViewed 559 times

Gone are the days of live recording. With the advent of computerisation of music, many an old-timer lament the soul in music is missing. That is another matter. There are music directors like Ilayaraja and Vidyasagar who gets the opportunity to conduct live recording occasionally for directors like K. Balachander

and K. Viswanath. In today's track recording, instrument players and percussionists are employed and their version in the tune is recorded separately and the music director later joins them as per the composition. So even in such system, the musicians find work. Most music directors work this way.

But there are some music directors who solely depend on electronic key boards, create all sorts of 'sounds' for the tune from the key board and record a song, without employing the musicians. And these music directors charge the producer in the package format--that is they take the contract for the songs and background score for a certain amount that includes payment for the singers as well as the musicians.

By creating the entire music with the key board, they avoid employing musicians. This has invited the wrath of the musicians union and recently the union is said to have blacklisted three music directors who charged the producers under package and did not employ any musician. It is surprising to note that popular music directors Bharadwaj and Dhina were among the three. The third, Vijay Antony is an upcoming film music director.
