Question: Will the DMK support base be affected because of the Madurai incidents?
Answer: There is bound to be some effect. For the present, I am not in a position to quantify it.

Question: What does the presence of former UP CM Mulayam Singh Yadav at Mayawati's swearing ceremony show?
Answer: It only betrays the sorry state of affairs prevailing in the country which has resulted in such an ordinary incident being made out into something extraordinary.

Question: What is Rahul Gandhi's position in the Congress – is he its strength or weakness?
Answer: I cannot call him the party's weakness. But, he certainly doesn't have the strength to overcome its weakness.

Question: Despite being a [part of one of the] majority [communities in the state] the followers of a leadership belonging to a minority community deride us – who have a majority [in the Assembly] as a minority [government], says Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi. Comment.
Answer: It is obvious that he is referring to the minority community to which Jayalalithaa belongs vis-à-vis the bulk of her supporters who are drawn from other communities that are in a majority in the state. Let us for the time being, ignore his political innuendo for a moment. Regardless of who is the Chief Minister of the state, he/she will hail from a minority community because the sheer numbers of all the other communities put together will always be more. Therefore, even if one accepts the tortuous logic of the Minister – Kalaingar's government is in a minority!

Question: What is your take on President Abdul Kalam's opinion that there should be a two-party arrangement in the nation and communists' opposition to this advice?
Answer: Kalam's opinion only mirrors mine – which has been expressed for a long time in Thuglak. And I am not surprised about the communists' opposition to a stable government.
N Shanmugam, Salem 1
Question: Can one hope that Mayawati's government in UP will not be disturbed for the next five years?
Answer: I cannot say so with complete conviction because there are so many imponderables like complaints, commissions of enquiry, law and order situations, enmasse resignation of MLAs, etc.
V Muttiah, Tirunelveli Town
Question: What do you think is the real reason for Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party winning such a big mandate in UP?
Answer: The majority of the people in that state wanted to vote against Mulayam Singh's government and Mayawati managed to covey the impression that she is indeed the viable alternative. In my opinion, the Congress was nowhere in the picture and the BJP did not have a leader in the state with a personality big enough to appeal to the voters.

Question: "This is not a fete to felicitate CM Karunanidhi for completing 50 years as a legislator…[on the contrary] it is a celebration hailing democracy, secularism, economic progress and social justice," says [Union Finance Minister] P Chidambaram.
Comment.
Answer: As a true Finance Minister, he knows that the CM hasn't completed 50 years as a legislator after a little bit of calculation. [As a consequence] he has given other reasons to justify the do.

Question: Now that we have won the series against Bangladesh, what do you have to say about Indian cricket?
Answer: Series with [minnows like] Bangladesh is always disadvantageous to us. While thumping victories mean very little, any loss will be considered a catastrophe.
KGS Govindan, Krishnapuram
Question: Is there a possibility of a split in the DMK following the Dinakaran opinion poll fiasco?
Answer: I don't think so [because, in my opinion] Dayanidhi Maran doesn't have the necessary support in the party to engineer it.
Padmini Balaraman, Coimbatore 38
Question: The Chief Election Commissioner says the body must also have the powers to suspend or cancel the recognition accorded to political parties. Comment.
Answer: Insofar as the matter is within the purview of the courts, no one should have any objections to this demand.
LN Shiva Kumar, Chennai 33
Question: Jayalalithaa has said that the Tamil Nadu police have, for all practical purposes, become ineffective. Comment.
Answer: This isn't just an allegation anymore because the Madurai attacks [on the Dinakaran establishment] have provided [ample] testimony to this fact.
K Ramesh, Chennai 5
Question: What do you make of the notice of breach of privilege being issued against Tamil Murasu newspaper on the basis of charges of contorting the proceedings in the Assembly?
Answer: This is not just a threat alone. It is also meant to indicate to the advertisers that the paper's owners are persona-non-grata as far as the government is concerned.
LN Shiva Kumar, Chennai 33
Question: What is your take on the legal notice issued by MK Azhagiri's lawyers against Dinakaran demanding the immediate stoppage of publication of news items against him?
Answer: That isn't the news point. The paper has indeed stopped publication of such items since then. Now, to me, that is interesting.
S Chokkalinga Adityan, Rosmiyapuram
Question: Does Stalin have any possibility of becoming the [next] CM?
Answer: There is indeed such a possibility. But it can happen in two ways. He can become the CM after the Kalaingar era. In that case, he will have to face a series of problems posed by the cash rich media organisations like Sun TV and unexpected opposition from within the rank and file of the DMK itself. But, Karunanidhi can bypass all that and get it over and done with during his autumn years and hand over charge to Stalin shortly. This can result in the avoidance of all the aforesaid problems, ensure the DMK party faithful to accept Stalin's leadership, help the younger man settle down and gain a hands-on administrative experience. One will have to adopt a wait-and-watch approach to find out which method will be applied to ensure his succession.
